Proper task lighting is important for computer workstations due to the following: Computer screens typically flicker on and off about 100 times per second in what is known as the refresh rate which is stroboscopic by itself. The synchronized flickering from BOTH normal fluorescent lamps and computer monitors combine to create an intense stroboscopic effect leading to early eye fatigue and represents a major health problem. Furthermore, there is the projection of an unwanted light image on the monitor which produces additional glare. Lastly, this glare also reduces the color contrast of computer monitors.
